Spend Some Time at the Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium. Those who come to the St. Johnsbury area in Vermont will certainly want to pay the Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium a visit. Franklin Fairbanks, an industrialist, founded the museum in 1889. Today it is one of the premier museums in New England, attracting countless visitors each year. Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium is a fun place that the whole family can enjoy.
It has quite a few interesting things for visitors to see and do. In fact, the museum holds more than 175,000 different objects that range from historical pieces to wonders from the natural world. Guests will be able to see a number of changing exhibits at the museum, as they rotate through their collection.
The Natural History Collection offers a look at an array of interesting objects. Visitors will be able to see dioramas featuring animals, plants, and more. Fossils and minerals are also on display. While you will be able to see quite a few different flora and fauna exhibits from Vermont, items from all around the world are on display.
In the Historical Collection, you will be able to see household, industrial, and agricultural, tools and implements through the ages. Many of the items on display were used in ice-harvesting, farming, and woodworking. You will also find house wares, dolls, photos, and a lot more.
The Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium also houses an impression collection of scales from the Fairbanks Scale Factory. Check out the doctors' scales, hay scales, postal scales, and just about every other type of scale you can imagine.
The Cultural Interests area has a number of artifacts and antiques from around the world. Guests to the museum will be able to see tools, weapons, toys, artwork, clothing and more from places such as the Philippines, the Middle East, and Africa.
The museum also is home to the only public planetarium in Vermont. Everyone will have a good time learning about outer space and all of the amazing things found there.
The museum is open from Monday through Saturday from 9AM to 5PM, and on Sunday from 1PM to 5PM. From October to April, the museum is closed on Mondays. Admission for adults is $6, seniors and children younger than 17 are $5. Children under 5 are free.
