New England Maple Museum - Pittsford, Vermont

Visiting the New England Maple Museum is a Sweet Treat You can't Miss. Rutland, Vermont has a number of things for the visitor to see and do. However, one of the things that you don't want to miss when you are in Rutland is the New England Maple Museum. After all, wonderfully sweet maple syrup is one of the Vermont's most famous exports.

A trip to the museum is both educational and fun for everyone in the family. You will discover more than 100 feet of beautifully painted murals painted by artist Grace Brigham. The murals show the history of maple sugaring in a way that is easy to understand and that is visually pleasing.

In addition to the mural, you will find the largest and most comprehensive collection of artifacts used in the process of maple sugaring. You can see everything from ancient tools used by Native Americans to collect sap to the most modern technological advances in sap harvesting and syrup making. You can even watch as evaporators show the process in a simulation.

The museum also has a number of historical photos that depict the process and the people who made the syrup over the ages.  You can also see some dioramas that detail life as it was more than a hundred years ago on the farms and in the forest. Visitors will also want to see the slide show, which depicts the process of maple sugaring from beginning to end.

The fun doesn't stop there, however. Another treat is the live demonstrations that the museum offers. You can watch candy making and the construction of a wooden sap bucket. Of course, you will likely want to sample some of the syrups and candy in the tasting room as well!

Before leaving the museum, be sure to stop by the gift shop, where you can load up on syrups and maple candy. You can also find artwork, books, and a whole lot more. Chances are that you will find quite a few delicious different items to bring home with you.

The museum has hours that change with the season. From May 23 to October 31, the hours are 8:30AM to 5:30PM daily, and from November 1 through December 23, it is open from 10AM to 4PM everyday. The museum is closed January and February, and opens in mid March to May 22 from 10AM to 4PM daily.
